1Department of Propaedeutic Surgery, Medical School of Athens University, Athens, Greece.
Background:
The introduction of foreign bodies into the rectum is not an uncommon medical problem. The phenomenon has increased in the homosexual population. In a 25-year period we have encountered 34 patients with retained rectal foreign bodies.
Material And Methods:
We have performed five laparotomies due to perforation and a laparotomy in order to retrieve a large wooden object.
Results:
We have observed only one complication in a woman who developed a retrovaginal fistula.
Conclusions:
In order to obtain successful extraction of the foreign body the surgeon, apart from the well-known techniques, must exercise a high degree of ingenuity. Finally, it should be emphasized that the appropriate respect should be shown to all patients who seek treatment for this problem.
Insights
Foreign bodies in the rectum are a growing concern, particularly in the homosexual population. Successful removal requires surgical ingenuity and patient respect.
Area of Science:
- Medical Science
- Surgical Procedures
- Gastroenterology
Background:
- Rectal foreign body introduction is a recognized medical issue.
- An increasing prevalence has been observed within the homosexual population.
- Thirty-four cases of retained rectal foreign bodies were managed over 25 years.
Purpose of the Study:
- To review the management of retained rectal foreign bodies.
- To highlight the surgical challenges and outcomes associated with rectal foreign bodies.
Main Methods:
- Surgical intervention was employed for complications and large objects.
- Five laparotomies were performed for rectal perforation.
- One laparotomy was necessary for the retrieval of a large wooden foreign body.
Main Results:
- The study identified a low complication rate.
- One patient developed a retrovaginal fistula, the sole complication observed.
- Surgical intervention was required in specific complex cases.
Conclusions:
- Successful extraction of rectal foreign bodies demands significant surgical creativity.
- Standard surgical techniques may need adaptation for complex cases.
- Emphasizes the importance of respectful patient care for individuals seeking treatment for this condition.
