Diabetes appears to protect against abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs). This review found a lower prevalence of diabetes in patients with AAAs compared to those without, suggesting a potential protective role. Further research is needed.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To systematically review and analyze the association between diabetes mellitus and abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAAs).
  • To explore potential mechanisms underlying any observed relationship.
  • To provide a pooled analysis of prevalence data.

  • A systematic literature review was conducted using PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane databases up to September 2009.
  • Studies reporting prevalence data for diabetes in AAA patients and controls were identified.
