Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Surgical Oncology
  • Gastrointestinal Surgery

Context:

  • Local recurrence after rectal adenocarcinoma surgery presents significant treatment challenges.
  • Managing recurrent rectal cancer requires evaluating surgical options and palliative care.

Purpose:

  • To describe the personal experience and outcomes of treating local recurrence following rectal adenocarcinoma surgery.
  • To assess the efficacy of surgical resection versus palliative treatment for recurrent rectal cancer.

Summary:

  • This study analyzed 31 patients with local recurrence post-rectal adenocarcinoma surgery.
  • Surgical exeresis was feasible in 17 patients, but only 6 reported improved quality of life.
  • Survival rates were comparable between surgically treated patients and those receiving palliative care for inoperable recurrence.

Impact:

  • Highlights the limited impact of surgical intervention on quality of life for rectal cancer recurrence.
  • Suggests palliative care offers similar survival outcomes to surgery in certain recurrent rectal cancer cases.
  • Informs clinical decision-making regarding treatment strategies for rectal adenocarcinoma recurrence.
