Objectives:
In this study we evaluated the associated conditions and demographic data of the patients who have hip fractures.
Patients And Methods:
Between 1999-2000 and 2004-2005, 109 patients who had hemiarthroplasty due to interthrocanteric fractures treated at our clinic were included in this study. Fifty-one patients with interthrocanteric fractures who were operated on between the years 1999 and 2000 (19 males, 32 females; mean age 76.1 years; range 65 to 90 years) formed the first group and, 58 patients (17 males, 41 females; mean age 81.5 years; range 51 to 95 years) who were operated on between the years 2004 and 2005 formed the second group. Both groups were evaluated and compared with respect to their age at which the fractures occurred, sex, associated conditions, the time interval between surgery and the onset of the fractures and survival rates after surgery.
Results:
Associated conditions of intertrochanteric fractures in the elderly are osteoporosis, dementia, cardiac disease and hypertension. We concluded that there is a statistically significant increase in the average age of the patients in the second group when compared to the first group, while there is no significant difference in other clinical data. There was no correlation between associated conditions and postoperative mortality rates between the two groups.
Conclusion:
According to our data there is a consistence between Turkish Statistical Institute data and our patients' data on age. Consequently, there is an increase in the average age of the interthrocanteric fractures in the elderly population.
