Assessment of the Gastrointestinal System II: Health Perception Pattern

Assessing the gastrointestinal (GI) system is a complex process that begins with collecting subjective data. This data, collected through patient interviews, provides crucial insights into the patient's health history, perception patterns, and lifestyle habits, all contributing significantly to GI health.
Health Perception Patterns
Health perception patterns offer valuable insights into a patient's lifestyle habits and how they may impact their GI health. These patterns include:

Area of Science:

  • Nutrition science
  • Public health research
  • Dietary assessment methodologies

Background:

  • The web-based Food Behaviour Questionnaire (FBQ) has been revised since its initial development and validation.
  • The FBQ integrates a 24-hour diet recall, food frequency questionnaire, and behavioral components.
  • Previous validation of the FBQ necessitates further assessment of its revised components.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To obtain qualitative feedback on the revised Food Behaviour Questionnaire (FBQ).
  • To validate the 24-hour diet recall component of the FBQ in a student population.
  • To assess the FBQ's utility for dietary assessment in diverse school-aged children.

Main Methods:

  • Cognitive interviews utilizing "think aloud" techniques with dietitian experts (n=11) and grade six students (n=21).
  • Administration of the FBQ to multi-ethnic students (n=201) in grades six to eight.
  • Comparison of food group and nutrient intakes between FBQ data and subsequent one-on-one dietitian-led diet recall interviews.

Main Results:

  • Qualitative feedback indicated positive user reception of the FBQ, with suggestions for enhancements.
  • Significant positive correlations were observed between FBQ and dietitian interview data for energy and nutrient intakes (p<0.001).
  • The FBQ demonstrated good reliability (Intraclass correlation coefficients ≥0.5) but underestimated energy and carbohydrate intake, partly due to portion size estimation for specific foods.

Conclusions:

  • The FBQ's 24-hour diet recall is a valid method for dietary assessment in diverse Ontario children (grades 6-8).
  • The questionnaire shows good agreement with traditional diet recall interviews for key nutrients.
  • Further refinements to the FBQ could improve accuracy in portion size estimation.
