Summary

Children with poor reading skills, but not dyslexia, showed reduced distance base-in fusional vergence. This highlights the importance of assessing distance vergence ranges in children experiencing reading difficulties.

  • Measurements were taken with best spectacle correction.
  • Main Results:

    • Poor readers exhibited significantly lower mean distance base-in break and base-in recovery values compared to controls (p < 0.01).
    • No significant differences were found in distance/near horizontal heterophoria, distance/near horizontal fusional vergence ranges, AC/A ratio, NPC, or stereoacuity.

    Conclusions:

    • This study provides novel data on the binocular vision of children with poor reading skills but no dyslexia.
    • Reduced distance base-in fusional vergence is a key finding.
    • Assessment of distance fusional vergence ranges is recommended for children with reading complaints.
