Background:

Unexplained fatigue syndromes present complex, multidimensional symptoms.
Interpersonal dynamics may significantly influence the experience of chronic fatigue.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the association between interpersonal problems and fatigue symptoms in patients with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS).
To test the hypothesis that increased fatigue severity correlates with social withdrawal.

Main Methods:

Self-report questionnaires assessed interpersonal problems and fatigue (self-rated and clinically-rated).
A primary care CFS group (N=52) was compared to patients with minor medical conditions (N=51) and chronic organic disease (N=52).

Main Results:

CFS patients reported significantly higher fatigue and social withdrawal than those with minor medical conditions.
CFS patients showed more fatigue-related disability than those with chronic organic disease, but no distinct interpersonal issues.
A significant correlation was found between fatigue severity (self-rated and clinically-rated) and social withdrawal.

Conclusions:

CFS patients exhibit greater fatigue and social withdrawal compared to other clinical groups.
Discrepancies in symptom interpretation between patients and physicians may contribute to patients feeling misunderstood and subsequent social withdrawal.
