Summary

The new Salzburg Reading Desk (SRD) accurately measures reading acuity and speed at a comfortable distance for patients. This device is reliable for clinical use, especially for presbyopia correction comparisons.

  • Reading distance and speed were evaluated in 27 emmetropic and presbyopic patients using log-scaled Radner Reading Charts on the SRD.
  • Main Results:

    • The SRD demonstrated high accuracy, with a mean distance read-out difference of 0.08±0.13 cm compared to a meter ruler.
    • Presbyopic patients utilized their optimal reading distance, averaging 49.74±4.43 cm.
    • Reading speed remained consistent for larger typefaces (152-157 wpm) but decreased with smaller typefaces over time.

    Conclusions:

    • The Salzburg Reading Desk (SRD) is a valid and reliable tool for assessing reading acuity at the best reading distance.
    • The SRD is suitable for both experimental settings and clinical evaluation of presbyopic patients.
