Summary

Vitamin C (ascorbate) supplementation significantly reduced the frequency of minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis (MRAS) outbreaks and associated pain in children. This study suggests ascorbate may be an effective treatment for MRAS.

Background:

  • Minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis (MRAS) is a prevalent, painful oral inflammatory condition with juvenile onset and unknown causes.
  • Polymorphonuclear leukocytes are implicated in the pathogenesis of MRAS.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate the efficacy of ascorbate (vitamin C) in reducing MRAS outbreak frequency and pain severity.
  • To explore ascorbate's potential role in modulating neutrophil function in MRAS patients.

Main Methods:

  • A crossover clinical trial involving 16 pediatric patients with MRAS.
  • Patients received an oral dosage of 2000 mg/m(2)/day of ascorbate.
  • Superoxide anion production by polymorphonuclear leukocytes was evaluated pre-treatment.

Main Results:

  • A statistically significant 50% reduction in oral ulcer outbreaks was observed.
  • A notable decline in pain levels associated with MRAS was reported.
  • Neutrophils in MRAS patients showed priming for superoxide anion production.

Conclusions:

  • Ascorbate may mitigate neutrophil-mediated inflammation by modulating reactive oxygen species generation and promoting neutrophil apoptosis.
