The Prostate Cancer Questionnaire for Carers (PCQ-C) is a reliable and valid tool for assessing the needs of carers of men with prostate cancer. This questionnaire is ready for use in improving prostate cancer care quality.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Health Services Research
  • Patient Experience Measurement

Background:

  • Patient experience is routinely monitored, but carer experience is often overlooked despite its significance.
  • Carer needs must be addressed to enable them to fulfill their supportive role effectively.
  • This study evaluates the Prostate Cancer Questionnaire for Carers (PCQ-C), a new instrument for measuring carer experiences in prostate cancer care.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the reliability, validity, and acceptability of the newly developed PCQ-C.
  • To establish the PCQ-C as a tool for assessing and improving prostate cancer care for carers.
  • To provide a validated instrument for research and quality improvement initiatives.

Main Methods:

  • A postal survey was distributed to 1087 carers of men with prostate cancer.

E-Patient Counseling Trial (E-PACO): Computer Based Education versus Nurse Counseling for Patients to Prepare for Colonoscopy

Published on: August 1, 2019

  • Test-retest reliability was assessed by re-administering the PCQ-C to 210 carers.
  • Qualitative interviews with nine carers and feedback from four hospitals evaluated validity and acceptability.
  • Main Results:

    • A response rate of 47.3% (514 carers) was achieved with minimal missing data.
    • The PCQ-C demonstrated high internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha 0.80-0.89) and moderate to high test-retest stability (ICC 0.52-0.83).
    • Carer interviews and hospital feedback confirmed the PCQ-C's validity, acceptability, and usefulness for quality improvement.

    Conclusions:

    • The PCQ-C is a validated and acceptable instrument for measuring the experiences of carers of men with prostate cancer.
    • The PCQ-C is ready for implementation in clinical settings for quality improvement and research.
    • Utilizing the PCQ-C can help address unmet needs and enhance the quality of prostate cancer care for both patients and their carers.
