Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate CEACAM-7 expression levels in rectal cancer tissues.
  • To determine if CEACAM-7 expression can predict disease recurrence in rectal cancer patients.

Main Methods:

  • Quantitative real-time PCR was used to analyze CEACAM-7 mRNA expression in normal rectal mucosa and tumor tissues from 84 rectal cancer patients.
  • Expression levels were compared between normal tissue, disease-free survivors, and patients who developed recurrence.

Main Results:

  • Rectal cancers showed a significant 21-fold decrease in CEACAM-7 expression compared to normal mucosa (P = .002).
  • CEACAM-7 expression was significantly lower in tumors that recurred, particularly in stage II patients (14-fold decrease, P = .002).
  • Disease-free survival for stages I-III correlated with CEACAM-7 expression levels (P = .036), notably for stage II (P = .018).

Conclusions:

  • CEACAM-7 expression is significantly reduced in rectal cancer and serves as a potential biomarker for recurrence.
  • Decreased CEACAM-7 expression can help identify a subset of rectal cancer patients who may benefit from tailored adjuvant therapy.
