Summary

Surgical clipping of ophthalmic segment aneurysms, though complex, offers good outcomes. This microsurgical approach achieved an 83% good outcome rate with acceptable complications for these challenging intracranial aneurysms.

Background:

  • Ophthalmic segment aneurysms constitute approximately 5% of all intracranial aneurysms.
  • The paraclinoid region's complex anatomy presents significant surgical challenges for these aneurysms.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical features, complications, and outcomes of surgically treated ophthalmic segment aneurysms.
  • To assess the efficacy and safety of microsurgical clipping for these specific aneurysms.

Main Methods:

  • Retrospective analysis of clinical records for patients treated between January 2001 and September 2008.
  • Inclusion of 78 patients with ophthalmic segment aneurysms, with 56 undergoing microsurgery, primarily direct clipping.

Main Results:

  • A good outcome (Glasgow Outcome Scale [GOS] 4-5) was achieved in 83% of patients.
