Background:

  • Current scar evaluation methods are subjective and primarily used for burn scars.
  • A novel tool, the visual assessment of linear scars, was developed for linear scar evaluation.
  • This study aimed to compare patient and surgeon scar ratings and assess surgeon reliability.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine if patients and surgeons provide similar ratings for linear surgical scars.
  • To evaluate the intrarater and interrater reliability of the visual assessment of linear scars tool among surgeons.

Main Methods:

  • 51 patients and 2 surgeons rated surgical scars using the visual assessment of linear scars tool.
  • Patient scars were rated at 6 months postoperatively.
  • Statistical analysis included t-tests for rating differences and Spearman correlation for reliability.

Main Results:

  • Surgeons' scar ratings did not differ significantly between themselves.
  • Surgeons consistently rated scars as worse appearing than patients did.
  • High intrarater reliability (rho > 0.5) and borderline interrater reliability (rho = 0.53) were found for surgeons.

Conclusions:

  • The visual assessment of linear scars tool offers a simple method for assessing postsurgical linear scars.
  • Patient perception of scar appearance may be more favorable than that of surgeons.
  • The tool is reliable for surgeons assessing repeated scar photographs.
