Ostomy Care01:24

Ostomy Care

Introduction
An ostomy is a surgical procedure that creates an artificial opening from the intestines to the outside of the body, allowing for the rerouting of effluent. This opening is known as a stoma. A stoma usually protrudes above the skin surface, appearing pink or red, moist, and round, and it lacks nerve sensations.
There are different types of ostomies, including colostomies, ileostomies, and urostomies:

Inflammatory Bowel Disease V: Surgical Management

Surgical interventions for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), which includes ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease, are essential in managing symptoms and addressing complications. The selection of surgical procedures is contingent upon the specific conditions and complications that stem from these illnesses.
Here are some common surgical interventions for IBD:
Muscles of the Abdomen01:21

Muscles of the Abdomen

The abdominal wall encircles the abdominal cavity, providing flexible protection and shielding the internal organs from harm. It is bordered at the top by the xiphoid process and costal margins, at the back by the vertebral column, and at the bottom by the pelvic bones and inguinal ligament. The abdominal wall is divided into two regions — the anterolateral and posterior regions.
Anterolateral Region
The anterolateral region comprises five paired muscles classified into the lateral and anterior...

Area of Science:

  • Plastic Surgery
  • Abdominal Wall Reconstruction

Background:

  • Major stomal problems can significantly impact patient quality of life.
  • Abdominal wall complications often require specialized surgical intervention.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review operative modifications of the abdominal wall for patients with major stomal problems.
  • To discuss surgical options including abdominoplasty, flaps, and liposuction.

Main Methods:

  • Review of surgical techniques for abdominal wall modification in stoma patients.
  • Analysis of outcomes and potential morbidities associated with these procedures.

Main Results:

  • Operative modification of the abdominal wall can benefit select patients with major stomal problems.
  • Surgical options include modified abdominoplasty, localized flaps, and liposuction.
  • These techniques are frequently successful but have potential for significant morbidity.

Conclusions:

  • Abdominal wall contouring, flaps, and liposuction are viable options for managing complex stomal issues.
  • Careful patient selection and risk assessment are crucial due to potential morbidity.
