Most hookah users incorrectly believe it is less harmful than cigarettes. This perception is more common among frequent users and less common among Asian ethnicities, highlighting a knowledge gap in hookah's health risks.
Area of Science:
- Public Health
- Tobacco Control
- Behavioral Science
Background:
- Tobacco cigarette smoking is a known carcinogen.
- Hookah smoking is a rapidly growing tobacco use trend in the US and Europe.
- Limited understanding exists regarding user perceptions of hookah's harmfulness.
Purpose of the Study:
- To assess beliefs about the harmfulness of smoking hookah.
- To identify demographic factors associated with perceptions of hookah's relative harm.
Main Methods:
- Survey conducted in San Diego, California cafes offering hookah.
- 235 hookah users participated in the study.
- Data collected on demographics, smoking habits, and perceptions of harm.
Main Results:
- The majority of hookah users (58.3%) perceive it as less harmful than cigarettes.
- Frequent hookah use correlated with higher belief in its lower harm.
- Asian ethnicity was associated with a lower likelihood of perceiving hookah as less harmful than cigarettes.
Conclusions:
- A significant knowledge gap exists regarding hookah's harmfulness compared to cigarettes.
- User perceptions are not strongly tied to demographic factors like gender.
- Public health education and policies are needed to address the risks of hookah use.
