Summary

Achieving preoperative weight loss before gastric bypass surgery is linked to fewer complications. Significant weight reduction, especially over 10% excess body weight (EBW), predicts better outcomes, reducing overall and major surgical risks.

  • Retrospective review of 881 patients undergoing open or laparoscopic gastric bypass at a tertiary referral center.

Conclusions:

  • Preoperative weight loss is associated with a lower incidence of complications following gastric bypass surgery.
  • Encouraging significant preoperative weight loss may be a valuable strategy to improve patient safety in bariatric procedures.
