Motion of a Projectile01:23

Motion of a Projectile

Projectile motion becomes evident when a player kicks the ball into the air. The launch angle, or the angle at which the ball is kicked, plays a crucial role in determining the trajectory of the projectile. As the ball soars through the air, influenced solely by gravity, its motion can be dissected into two independent velocity components: the horizontal and the vertical.
Horizontal motion, governed by the initial kick, maintains a constant velocity throughout the flight of the soccer ball.
Force and Momentum01:17

Force and Momentum

Force and momentum are intimately related. Force acting over time can change momentum, and Newton's second law of motion can be stated in its most broadly applicable form in terms of momentum. Momentum can be applied to systems where the mass is changing, such as rockets, as well as to systems of constant mass. Also, momentum continues to be a key concept in the study of atomic and subatomic particles in quantum mechanics. One can consider systems with varying mass in some detail; however, the...
Exercise and Muscle Performance01:27

Exercise and Muscle Performance

Exercise induces a range of adaptations in muscle tissue, depending on the type and duration of activity. Such physical training can be broadly categorized into two types: endurance exercises and resistance exercises.
Endurance exercises
Endurance exercises involve running, swimming, or cycling, which require repetitive movements with low force output. When a person engages in endurance exercise, a few noticeable changes occur in their skeletal muscles. For instance, the number of capillaries...

Impact: Problem Solving

In an experiment conducted during a Mars mission, a rover propels a projectile with an initial velocity, and the projectile rebounds after colliding with the Martian surface. To ascertain the maximum height attained by the projectile after this collision, the known restitution coefficient and acceleration due to gravity are employed.
By designating the launch point as the origin and utilizing kinematic equations, the vertical component of the projectile's velocity at the point of impact is...
Projectile Motion01:25

Projectile Motion

Projectile motion models the flight of an object launched into the air, such as a soccer ball kicked during a penalty, under the simplifying assumption that air resistance is negligible. When gravity is the only force, the object experiences a steady downward acceleration at all times. This single fact explains why projectile motion can be analyzed as two independent motions happening simultaneously: a horizontal motion that does not speed up or slow down, and a vertical motion that continually...
Exercise and Cardiac Output01:17

Exercise and Cardiac Output

Regular physical activity is essential for maintaining cardiovascular health, with aerobic exercises being particularly effective. According to the American Heart Association, 150 minutes of moderate to intense aerobic exercise per week is recommended for a healthy heart. Aerobic activities may include brisk walking, running, bicycling, cross-country skiing, and swimming, ideally performed three to five times per week.
Sustained exercise increases the muscles' oxygen demand, which can be met...

Area of Science:

  • Sports Science
  • Biomechanics
  • Athletic Training

Background:

  • Overhead throwing is a key skill in soccer.
  • Optimizing throwing velocity is crucial for player performance.
  • Different training methodologies exist to enhance throwing velocity.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To compare the effectiveness of resistance versus velocity-based throwing programs on soccer overhead throwing velocity.
  • To determine if matched workload training protocols yield different outcomes in throwing velocity.
  • To investigate the impact of specific training programs on throwing performance.

Main Methods:

  • Sixty-four sports science students were divided into resistance-training and velocity-training groups.
  • The resistance group used a 5-kg medicine ball (2 sets x 8 reps), while the velocity group used a soccer ball (4 sets x 16 reps).
  • Both programs were matched for workload and conducted over 6 weeks, with performance tested pre- and post-intervention.

Main Results:

  • Both training groups showed significant improvements in soccer ball throwing velocity.
  • The velocity-training group exhibited a slightly greater increase in throwing velocity compared to the resistance-training group.
  • No significant changes in 5-kg medicine ball throwing velocity were observed in either group.

Conclusions:

  • Both resistance and velocity-based throwing programs can effectively increase soccer overhead throwing velocity.
  • Training workload is a critical factor when designing and comparing different training interventions.
  • Short-term training interventions with matched workloads can lead to measurable improvements in throwing performance.
