Human parechovirus (HPeV) was detected in 8.3% of children with acute gastroenteritis in Sri Lanka. A novel HPeV strain, HPeV10, was identified, contributing to understanding viral gastroenteritis causes.
Area of Science:
- Virology
- Pediatrics
- Infectious Diseases
Background:
- Acute gastroenteritis is a significant cause of childhood illness globally.
- Human parechoviruses (HPeV) are emerging viral pathogens associated with various clinical manifestations, including gastroenteritis.
- Surveillance for HPeV in pediatric populations is crucial for understanding disease burden and epidemiology.
Purpose of the Study:
- To investigate the prevalence of human parechovirus (HPeV) in children suffering from acute gastroenteritis in Sri Lanka.
- To identify and characterize novel HPeV strains circulating in this population.
Main Methods:
- Fecal samples were collected from 362 children diagnosed with acute gastroenteritis in Sri Lanka between 2005 and 2006.
- Reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) was employed to detect HPeV RNA.
- Sequence analysis of the viral protein 1 (VP1) gene was performed to identify and characterize detected HPeV strains.
Main Results:
- A total of 30 out of 362 (8.3%) fecal samples tested positive for HPeV.
- Sequence analysis revealed the presence of a novel HPeV strain, designated HPeV10, in two of the positive samples.
- This finding indicates the circulation of diverse HPeV genotypes in Sri Lanka.
Conclusions:
- Human parechovirus (HPeV) is a relevant pathogen in pediatric acute gastroenteritis in Sri Lanka.
- The identification of a novel HPeV10 strain highlights the genetic diversity of HPeV and the need for ongoing molecular surveillance.
- Further research is warranted to elucidate the clinical significance and transmission dynamics of HPeV in the region.
