Summary

Older men show greater stride-to-stride gait variability during dual task walking compared to women. This increased variability in older men may indicate a higher risk of falls and warrants further investigation.

  • Participants walked under normal and dual task (backward spelling) conditions at self-selected speeds.

  • Both men and women exhibited decreased gait speed and increased gait variability during dual task walking.
  • Older men demonstrated significantly greater stride-to-stride variability in gait speed compared to older women during dual task walking.
