Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To analyze functional outcomes and sport participation in patients following unilateral noncomplicated total knee arthroplasty (TKA).
  • To determine the correlation between patient satisfaction, perceived knee function, and activity levels post-TKA.
  • To identify patient subgroups and factors influencing satisfaction and return to sport after TKA.

Main Methods:

  • A self-administered questionnaire was used to collect data from 347 patients (227 women, 120 men) with unilateral noncomplicated TKA.
  • The mean age of participants was 75 years, with a mean follow-up of 44 months.
  • Data analyzed included perceived knee function, activity limitations, expected activity levels, sport participation, and overall satisfaction.

Main Results:

  • 68% of patients reported their knee felt "normal", and 66% were as active as expected.
  • 98% of patients reported overall satisfaction, but 52% of those with insufficient activity were unsatisfied (P < 0.0001).
  • Preoperative pain duration, age, and previous surgeries did not influence subjective results or satisfaction. Among patients under 75, 10% participated in strenuous sports, but only 13% considered this important; however, 63% of motivated patients participated in impact sports.

Conclusions:

  • While most TKA patients achieve satisfactory outcomes and function, limitations in activity significantly decrease satisfaction.
  • Patient expectations regarding activity levels are critical for overall satisfaction after TKA.
  • A majority of motivated patients return to sport, highlighting the importance of addressing activity-related expectations in TKA rehabilitation.
