Summary

An unusual tapeworm found in a Japanese boy had abnormal segments and multiple reproductive organs. Molecular analysis confirmed it as Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense, a species previously undocumented with such morphology.

  • The anomalous proglottids featured slanted anterior and posterior margins and an unusual arrangement of 4-6 sets of reproductive organs.
  • The observed morphology did not align with any previously described cestode species.

Findings:

  • Morphological analysis alone was insufficient for definitive species identification due to the tapeworm's unique characteristics.
  • Molecular identification using nuclear and mitochondrial genes conclusively identified the tapeworm as Diphyllobothrium nihonkaiense.
