Background:

Purpose of the Study:

  • To estimate the prevalence and patterns of herbal product use among US women before and during pregnancy.
  • To identify demographic and geographic factors associated with herbal product use in pregnancy.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of data from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study, a population-based, case-control study.
  • Inclusion of 4239 women from 10 US centers who delivered infants without major birth defects between 1998 and 2004.

Main Results:

  • The prevalence of herbal product use was 10.9% in the 3 months before or during pregnancy, decreasing to 9.4% during pregnancy.
  • Herbal use was highest in the first trimester and associated with maternal age over 30 and education over 12 years.
  • Reported use varied significantly by state (5-17%), with ginger and ephedra common early in pregnancy, and teas and chamomile used throughout.

Conclusions:

  • An estimated 395,000 US births annually may involve antenatal exposure to herbal products.
  • Healthcare providers should routinely inquire about and educate patients on the potential risks of herbal product use during pregnancy.
