Summary

Celiac disease patients did not show increased autoimmune antibodies common in other conditions. However, autoimmune hypothyroid patients had significantly higher levels of anti-thyroid antibodies (anti-TPO and anti-TG).

  • Autoimmune hypothyroid patients exhibited significantly higher levels of anti-thyroid peroxidase (anti-TPO) and anti-thyroglobulin (anti-TG) antibodies compared to celiac disease and control groups (<0.001).

Conclusions:

  • The study found no increased frequency of autoantibodies specific to other autoimmune diseases in celiac disease patients.
  • Elevated anti-TPO and anti-TG antibodies are characteristic of autoimmune hypothyroidism, as expected.
  • This research clarifies that celiac disease, in this cohort, is not associated with a broader spectrum of other specific autoimmune antibodies.
