Summary
Simultaneous laparoscopic urological surgeries in selected patients offer benefits like single anesthesia and hospital admission. This approach can reduce hospital stay and costs without increasing patient morbidity.
Area of Science:
- Minimally invasive surgery
- Urological surgery
- Laparoscopic procedures
Background:
- Advancements in minimal access surgery allow combining procedures to reduce hospital stay, morbidity, and cost.
- While combined laparoscopic procedures are common in general surgery, literature on combined urological laparoscopic surgeries is limited.
Purpose of the Study:
- To retrospectively analyze the outcomes of multiple laparoscopic urological procedures performed in a single stage.
- To evaluate the feasibility and safety of simultaneous laparoscopic surgeries in urology.
Main Methods:
- A retrospective analysis of patients undergoing simultaneous laparoscopic procedures between May 2003 and January 2009.
- Patients were categorized into three groups based on the primary urological organ involved (adrenal, kidney, renal collecting system/ureter) and compared with control groups undergoing single procedures.
- Operative details, hospital stay, and complications were analyzed.
Main Results:
- Thirty-two patients underwent a total of 64 laparoscopic procedures under single anesthesia.
- Laparoscopic adrenalectomy was the most common procedure (n=34), followed by laparoscopic nephrectomy (n=13).
- While Group 1 (adrenal) showed prolonged operative time and hospital stay compared to controls, Groups 2 (kidney) and 3 (renal collecting system/ureter) had comparable outcomes. All procedures were completed laparoscopically without conversion, and intraoperative end-tidal carbon dioxide levels remained within permissible limits.
Conclusions:
- Simultaneous laparoscopic procedures are feasible for selected urological diseases.
- This approach allows for single anesthesia and hospital admission, potentially reducing overall healthcare costs.
- The study suggests that combined laparoscopic urological surgeries can be performed without increasing patient morbidity.
