Background:

The link between introversion-extraversion and fear conditioning is debated.
Research has largely overlooked the impact of other Big Five personality domains on fear acquisition.

Purpose of the Study:

To investigate the associations between facets of the Big Five personality domains and fear response acquisition.
To clarify the mixed findings regarding extraversion and fear conditioning.

Main Methods:

Utilized multi-level modeling to analyze data from 217 police and firefighter trainees.
Administered the Revised NEO Personality Inventory (NEO-PI-R) and a fear conditioning task.

Main Results:

Several facets of extraversion demonstrated opposing associations with electrodermal fear response acquisition.
Facets from other Big Five personality domains were also significantly linked to fear response acquisition.

Conclusions:

The complex associations of extraversion facets may explain inconsistent results in previous fear conditioning research.
This study highlights the broader influence of personality on fear acquisition beyond extraversion and neuroticism.
