Abstract:
This paper describes a method of grinding a concave mirror to produce a prescribed aspheric contour. It also describes polishing and figuring procedures. The method was applied to produce a relay optical system that relayed the image of the planet Venus, at the same time correcting aberrations. The image relayed was formed by an uncorrected spherical primary telescope mirror. The relayed image was located at the center of curvature of the mirror. The image here was substantially free of spherical aberration.
