Summary

Urinary bladder reconstruction in a dog was achieved using ileocystoplasty following extensive necrosis. This surgical technique shows promise for canine bladder repair when key structures are preserved.

Background:

  • Full-thickness urinary bladder necrosis is a severe complication that can occur post-operatively in dogs.
  • Reconstructive surgery is often necessary to restore bladder function and prevent euthanasia.

Observation:

  • A 6-month-old Golden Retriever developed extensive bladder wall necrosis (90-95%) two days after ovariohysterectomy.
  • A vascularized ileal segment, stripped of its mucosa, was used for bladder reconstruction.

Findings:

  • Serial imaging over one year demonstrated gradual bladder enlargement and mucosal surface development.
  • The dog regained urinary continence and voided normally (2-3 times/day) by six months post-surgery.
  • Renal function, urinalysis, and urine cultures remained normal during follow-up.
