Net Torque Calculations01:19

Net Torque Calculations

When a mechanic tries to remove a hex nut with a wrench, it is easier if the force is applied at the farthest end of the wrench handle. The lever arm is the distance from the pivot point (the hex nut in this case) to the person’s hand. If this distance is large, the torque is higher. Only the component of the force perpendicular to the lever arm contributes to the torque. Therefore, pushing the wrench perpendicular to the lever arm is more advantageous. If multiple people apply force to rotate...

Area of Science:

  • Healthcare Management
  • Clinical Practice Improvement
  • Health Services Research

Background:

  • Overview of the Referral Evaluation Project in South East Wales (2007-2008).
  • Focus on improving the quality and appropriateness of general practitioner (GP) referrals.

Purpose of the Study:

  • Engage GPs and hospital consultants in dialogue regarding referral validity and quality.
  • Promote the use of community-based services as alternatives to hospital referrals.

Main Methods:

  • Year-long peer review of GP referrals with protected time for GPs.
  • Six-weekly cluster meetings involving GPs and consultants to discuss referral appropriateness and community service utilization.
  • Feedback of referral data to practices by the local health board.

Main Results:

  • Improved referral quality as assessed by peer review.
  • Significant reduction (up to 50%) in orthopaedic and emergency admission referral rates.
  • Decreased variability in referral rates between practices and increased use of community-based services.

Conclusions:

  • The project demonstrated a sustainable and intuitive method for enhancing referral quality.
  • The approach effectively reduced inappropriate demand compared to traditional referral management systems.
