Hiatal Hernia01:25

Hiatal Hernia

A hiatal hernia is the abnormal protrusion of the stomach or other abdominal organs through the esophageal hiatus of the diaphragm into the thoracic cavity.Normally, the gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) lies below the diaphragm and is supported by the phrenoesophageal membrane, the diaphragmatic crura, and connective tissues. Weakening of these structures—due to aging, congenital defects like a short esophagus, or increased intra-abdominal pressure from coughing, obesity, pregnancy, or heavy...

Summary

This case report highlights urgent surgical repair for strangulated ventral hernias using polypropylene nets. Delayed elective surgery led to acute interventions, favoring a proactive surgical approach.

Area of Science:

  • Abdominal Surgery
  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Case Reports

Background:

  • Ventralis permagna hernias present complex surgical challenges.
  • Strangulation necessitates urgent intervention, often complicating elective repair strategies.

Observation:

  • Two patients with ventralis permagna experienced strangulation within the hernial sac.
  • Initial elective surgery plans were postponed due to various factors.

Findings:

  • Both patients underwent acute surgical repair utilizing polypropylene mesh.
  • The use of polypropylene nets was effective in managing strangulated ventral hernias.

Implications:

  • This case report advocates for a more proactive approach to scheduling elective surgery for large ventral hernias.
