Background:

  • Exercise thallium-201 (201TI) emission computed tomography (ECT) is a standard diagnostic tool for coronary artery disease (CAD).
  • The interpretation of 201TI ECT currently focuses on myocardial uptake, but lung uptake may offer additional prognostic information.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To evaluate the clinical utility of measuring lung uptake, specifically the lung/heart ratio of 201TI uptake, in routine exercise 201TI ECT interpretation.
  • To determine if lung/heart ratios correlate with the severity of coronary artery disease.

Main Methods:

  • A lung/heart ratio of 201TI uptake was calculated from anterior ECT images.
  • Ratios were measured in 25 clinically normal subjects, 91 angiographically normal subjects, and 265 patients with confirmed coronary artery disease.

    • Incorporating lung/heart ratio analysis into routine exercise 201TI ECT interpretation may enhance diagnostic accuracy and prognostic assessment.
    • This simple quantitative measure can aid in identifying patients with more extensive and severe coronary artery disease.
