  • To understand the operational consequences of NBIs in recent military deployments.

  • A survey was administered to 3,367 troops during mid- or postdeployment in Iraq, Afghanistan, and surrounding regions (January 2005–May 2006).
  • Data collected included NBI occurrence, healthcare seeking behavior, and factors associated with risk.

  • 19.5% of surveyed troops reported at least one NBI, with 85% seeking medical care.
  • Factors such as service component, rank, and unit type were associated with NBI risk.
  • NBIs led to personnel being called in as backup or shift changes in 20% of cases and grounded flight status in a third of affected individuals.
