To quantify the frequency and types of errors in references from Peruvian medical journals.
To identify common sources of reference inaccuracies.

A systematic review of 515 references from Peruvian medical journals was conducted.
Errors were identified in 47.6% of the references.
The most frequent errors involved presentation style, authorship, and titles, often due to spelling mistakes.

Impact:

High rates of reference errors were observed, indicating a need for improvement.
The findings suggest implementing systematic reference revisions during the editorial process.
Further discussion on improving reference quality in scientific periodicals is warranted.
