Discovering the molecular components of intercellular junctions--a historical view

Metazoan organization relies on cell junctions, crucial for tissue function. Recent decades revealed the molecular details of four major vertebrate cell junction types: desmosomes, adherens, tight junctions (TJs), and gap junctions (GJs).
