Ascites01:19

Ascites

DefinitionAscites is the buildup of fluid inside the peritoneal cavity. It occurs when fluid moves out of the vascular system faster than the peritoneal lymphatics can remove it. This fluid shift is most commonly seen in liver cirrhosis but can also appear in several other systemic disorders.EtiologyCirrhosis remains the leading cause of ascites. Other conditions that can contribute include:Heart failureConstrictive pericarditisAbdominal cancersNephrotic syndromeSevere protein–calorie...
Cholecystitis01:20

Cholecystitis

Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, most commonly caused by obstruction of the cystic duct. This blockage prevents bile from draining, leading to gallbladder distension, inflammation, and potentially serious complications. This condition may present acutely or chronically and can happen with or without gallstones.EtiologyAbout 95% of cholecystitis cases are calculous, caused by gallstones blocking the cystic duct, leading to bile accumulation and inflammation of the gallbladder...

Summary

A patient with unresectable liposarcoma developed chylous ascites after radiotherapy. Conservative treatments failed, but a peritoneovenous shunt successfully managed this complication.

Area of Science:

  • Oncology
  • Gastroenterology
  • Surgical Oncology

Background:

  • Retroperitoneal liposarcoma is a rare malignancy.
  • Radiotherapy is a treatment modality for unresectable liposarcoma.
  • Chylous ascites is a known complication of abdominal radiation therapy.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To report a case of successful management of post-radiational chylous ascites.
  • To discuss the pathophysiology of chylous ascites following radiotherapy for retroperitoneal liposarcoma.
  • To review management strategies for this rare complication.

Main Methods:

  • Case report of a 64-year-old male patient.
  • Review of pathophysiology and treatment of chylous ascites.
  • Surgical intervention with a peritoneovenous shunt after failure of conservative management.

Intraoperative Strategy under Complex Vascular Adhesion for Laparoscopic Radical Resection of Bismuth-Corlette Type IIIb Perihilar Cholangiocarcinoma

Published on: February 13, 2026

Main Results:

  • The patient developed chylous ascites post-radiotherapy for retroperitoneal liposarcoma.
  • Conservative management failed to resolve the chylous ascites.
  • Peritoneovenous shunt insertion resulted in successful management of chylous ascites.

Conclusions:

  • Chylous ascites is a potential complication of radiotherapy for retroperitoneal liposarcoma.
  • Peritoneovenous shunting can be an effective treatment option for refractory chylous ascites.
  • Multidisciplinary management is crucial for optimizing outcomes in such cases.
