Summary

This case study highlights a rare orbital abscess following facial trauma. Prompt surgical drainage and antibiotics led to rapid visual recovery and symptom improvement.

  • Orbital abscesses are uncommon, particularly following facial trauma without fractures.
  • Early diagnosis and intervention are crucial for preserving vision.

Observation:

  • A 20-year-old female presented with acute, severe orbital abscess symptoms 2 days post-facial trauma.
  • Symptoms included diplopia, photophobia, fever, periorbital swelling, ptosis, proptosis, and limited ocular motility.
  • CT scan confirmed soft tissue swelling and proptosis, with no facial bone fractures.

Findings:

  • Surgical incision and drainage of the orbit, combined with intravenous antibiotics, were performed.
  • Maxillary sinus was accessed via the Caldwell-Luc approach.
  • Postoperative recovery was rapid, with significant improvement in visual acuity and ocular motility within 2 days.
