Fetal death after normal biophysical profile.

Summary

Despite a normal biophysical profile, three cases of fetal death occurred within 3 days. While this test is excellent for predicting fetal well-being, increasing testing frequency cannot prevent all false-negative results.

Area of Science:

  • Obstetrics and Gynecology
  • Fetal Medicine
  • Perinatal Testing

Background:

  • The biophysical profile (BPP) is a standard antepartum test to assess fetal well-being.
  • A normal BPP score typically indicates a low risk of fetal compromise.

Observation:

  • Three distinct cases of fetal death are presented.
  • These fetal deaths occurred within a short timeframe (3 days) following a normal BPP result.

Findings:

  • The study highlights a low incidence of false-negative biophysical profile tests.
  • Even with a normal BPP, there remains a possibility of unexpected fetal demise.

Implications:

  • Current antepartum testing protocols, including BPP frequency, may not entirely eliminate the risk of fetal death.

Related Experiment Videos

  • Further research into optimizing antepartum surveillance strategies is warranted to address rare false-negative outcomes.
