Insights
Early diagnosis of cytomegalovirus infection in infants is crucial. Prompt treatment can prevent or reduce long-term developmental issues like psychomotor retardation and hypotonia.
Area of Science:
- Pediatric Neurology
- Infectious Diseases
- Developmental Pediatrics
Background:
- Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is a common congenital viral infection.
- Congenital CMV can lead to significant neurodevelopmental deficits.
- Early identification and intervention are critical for managing outcomes.
Observation:
- A 14-month-old male infant presented with psychomotor retardation and hypotonia.
- Neuroimaging (computerized axial tomography) revealed cerebral calcifications and ventriculomegaly secondary to cortical atrophy.
- Clinical and radiological findings suggested a diagnosis of cytomegalovirus infection.
Findings:
- The case highlights the potential for severe neurological sequelae from congenital cytomegalovirus infection.
- Ventriculomegaly and cortical atrophy indicate significant brain damage.
- Multiple calcifications are a characteristic finding in congenital CMV.
Implications:
- Early diagnosis of congenital CMV infection is essential for timely management.
- Available therapeutic options can mitigate or prevent long-term developmental impairments.
- This case underscores the importance of considering congenital infections in infants with developmental delays and neurological abnormalities.
Abstract:
A 14 months old male child with psychomotor retardation and hypotonia is reported, where computerized axial tomography revealed multiple calcification and ventriculomegaly secondary to cortical atrophy. Investigation suggested the diagnosis of cytomegalovirus infection. Importance of early diagnosis is emphasized as the potential long term sequelae can be prevented or reduced markedly with available therapeutic options.
