The use of ephedrine in epidural analgesia
1Department of Anaesthesiology, University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden.
Abstract:
The changes in arterial blood pressure following high epidural blockade with bupivacaine adrenaline, etidocaine adrenaline and HS 37 adrenaline have been retrospectively evaluated from a clinical study in middle-aged and elderly patients, with special emphasis on the role of ephedrine premedication. Epidural blockade without the use of vasopressors was usually followed by hypotension, but after ephedrine premedication the changes in blood pressure were insignificant. The heart rate did not change more in groups with ephedrine than in those without ephedrine premedication, although the incidence of bradycardia was lower with ephedrine premedication. No side effects of ephedrine were noted.

Local Anesthetics: Clinical Application as Epidural Anesthesia
Since epidural anesthetics can be infused through an epidural catheter, all types of drugs, including short-acting ones, can be administered. Chloroprocaine and lidocaine are examples of short and long-duration anesthetics, respectively. Bupivacaine...
Adrenergic Agonists: Mixed-Action Agents
Ephedrine and pseudoephedrine lack a catecholamine group, making them less susceptible to degradation by metabolic enzymes. They have increased oral bioavailability and lipophilicity, resulting in a longer duration of action. Their response is reduced by...

Adrenergic Agonists: Therapeutic Uses
Emergency and Intensive Care Unit (ICU) applications: Pressor agents increase blood pressure, heart rate, and contractility in shock and organ failure situations. Dopamine can induce vasodilation and stimulate adrenoceptors. Endogenous catecholamines are effective in treating cardiogenic shock. α2-agonists like clonidine can reverse anesthesia-induced hypertension.
