Summary

Parkinson's disease patients show deficits in detecting second-order motion across various strengths. This suggests higher-level visual cortex involvement in Parkinson's disease (PD) related motion perception impairments.

Background:

Parkinson's disease (PD) is associated with impaired motion perception.
First-order motion (luminance-defined) and second-order motion (non-luminance-defined) rely on distinct neural mechanisms.
Understanding these differences is crucial for assessing visual deficits in PD.

Purpose of the Study:

To compare the motion perception abilities of Parkinson's disease patients (PDPs) and normal subjects.
To investigate the differential impact of PD on first-order versus second-order motion detection.
To explore the role of higher-level visual cortex in PD-related visual impairments.

Main Methods:

Participants (PDPs and controls) discriminated the drift direction of first-order and second-order motion stimuli.
Stimuli varied in speed and strength.
Performance was assessed across a range of stimulus parameters.

Main Results:

PDPs exhibited deficits in first-order motion detection, primarily at lower motion strengths, indicating a potential ceiling effect.
Deficits in second-order motion detection were observed across both high and low motion strengths in PDPs.
Second-order motion perception appears more significantly affected by PD than first-order motion perception.

Conclusions:

Second-order motion detection is more vulnerable to deficits in Parkinson's disease compared to first-order motion detection.
These findings highlight the significant role of higher-level visual cortex dysfunction in the motion perception disabilities experienced by PD patients.
The results contribute to a better understanding of the neurovisual consequences of Parkinson's disease.
