Summary

Historically, Caesarean sections evolved from postmortem procedures to life-saving surgeries. Advances in anesthesia and asepsis significantly reduced maternal mortality, increasing C-section rates globally.

Background:

Early Caesarean sections were primarily performed postmortem to save the infant.
Advocacy for Caesarean sections on living women emerged in the 16th-17th centuries but faced significant opposition.
Improved understanding of labor mechanisms in the 18th-19th centuries led to its consideration in difficult deliveries.

Observation:

High maternal mortality rates historically limited the application of Caesarean sections.
Key 19th-century advancements included anesthesia, refined surgical techniques, and aseptic/antiseptic practices.
These developments contributed to a progressive decline in maternal mortality from the late 19th century onwards.

Findings:

The 20th century witnessed a dramatic decrease in maternal mortality associated with Caesarean sections.
