Summary

Functional knee braces (FKBs) are widely used for managing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. They offer support for ACL-deficient knees and protect grafts during ACL reconstruction recovery.

Knee Joint

The knee joint is the most complicated joint in the body. It consists of three articulations– two tibiofemoral and one patellofemoral. As is characteristic of synovial joints, the knee joint has a thin articular capsule that partially surrounds this joint cavity. Additionally, several ligaments, muscles, and cartilaginous structures support the movement of the knee.
A total of seven ligaments support the knee joint. The patellar ligament, which is also attached to the quadriceps femoris group...

Area of Science:

  • Orthopedics
  • Sports Medicine
  • Biomechanical Engineering

Background:

  • Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries are common, often requiring surgical reconstruction.
  • Functional knee braces (FKBs) are frequently employed in the management of ACL injuries.
  • FKBs are utilized for both ACL-deficient knees and post-operative graft protection.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To review the current role and acceptance of functional knee braces in managing ACL injuries.
  • To discuss the application of FKBs in ACL-deficient knees.
  • To highlight the use of FKBs for graft protection during rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction.

Main Methods:

  • Literature review of studies on functional knee braces and ACL injuries.
  • Analysis of clinical acceptance and application of FKBs.
  • Synthesis of evidence regarding brace use in ACL management.

Main Results:

  • Functional knee braces have gained significant acceptance in clinical practice.
  • FKBs are commonly prescribed for individuals with ACL deficiency.
  • Graft protection during rehabilitation following ACL reconstruction is a key application.

Conclusions:

  • Functional knee braces are a valuable tool in the comprehensive management of ACL injuries.
  • Their use is well-established for both non-operative and post-operative care.
  • FKBs contribute to graft protection and patient management protocols.
