Background:

African nations face challenges in voluntary blood donor recruitment and retention.
Complexities and costs hinder national blood policy implementation.
Reliance on replacement donors has not boosted voluntary donor initiatives.

Purpose of the Study:

To analyze activities for recruiting and retaining voluntary blood donors.
To evaluate donor records from mobile blood donation sessions between 2002 and 2008.

Main Methods:

Review of donor records from mobile blood donation sessions.
Analysis of voluntary blood donation activities and repeat donation trends.
Comparison of donation rates across different donor demographics and recruitment methods.

Main Results:

Over 71,000 donations collected, with 63.5% voluntary and 25% repeat donations.
School and college donors provided 60% of voluntary donations; radio drives increased contributions from 10% to 27%.
Muslim donor groups exceeded cost-effectiveness thresholds with 60% repeat donations, while Christian donors had lower rates.

Conclusions:

Repeat donation rates varied significantly among different blood donor groups in Kumasi, Ghana.
Community leaders play a crucial role in promoting altruistic blood donation.
Developing and assessing programs to convert replacement donors into repeat donors is recommended.
