Summary

This study investigated abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) prevalence in elderly men, finding links to smoking, alcohol, poor lung function, and angina. Decreased tissue elasticity may underlie these AAA risk factors.

Area of Science:

  • Vascular Surgery
  • Epidemiology
  • Gerontology

Background:

  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) is a significant vascular disease, particularly in elderly populations.
  • Understanding risk factors for AAA is crucial for early detection and prevention strategies.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To determine the prevalence of AAA in a cohort of elderly men.
  • To investigate the correlation between AAA and various established and potential risk factors.

Main Methods:

  • A population-based cohort study of men born in 1914 from Malmö.
  • Ultrasound screening of the aorta for aneurysmal changes.
  • Correlation analysis with data from a general health examination conducted 5 years prior.

Main Results:

Related Experiment Videos

  • The prevalence of AAA was 10.7% (39 out of 364 men) in the visualized aortas.
  • AAA presence was significantly associated with tobacco consumption, alcohol intake, impaired lung function, and a history of angina pectoris.
  • No significant association was found between AAA and hypertension, hyperlipidaemia, or hyperglycaemia.

Conclusions:

  • Tobacco, alcohol, impaired lung function, and angina are risk factors for abdominal aortic aneurysm in elderly men.
  • The findings suggest that decreased tissue elasticity might be a common underlying factor for both impaired lung function and AAA development.
