  • Trichomoniasis, caused by Trichomonas vaginalis (T. vaginalis), is a common sexually transmitted infection affecting the urogenital system.
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge is a frequent gynecological complaint necessitating investigation into potential causes, including T. vaginalis.

Purpose:

  • To investigate the association between various contraceptive methods and the prevalence of T. vaginalis infection among women presenting with abnormal vaginal discharge.

Summary:

  • A study of 253 women aged 20-48 with abnormal vaginal discharge found 22 cases (8.69%) of trichomoniasis.
  • T. vaginalis infection rates were highest among intrauterine device (IUD) users (14.70%) and coitus interruptus (CI) users (11.40%), with lower rates in condom users and non-users.
  • No significant association was found between oral contraceptive (OC) use and T. vaginalis infection.
