Summary

Early venous phase filling defects in the choriocapillaris are not more common in sickle cell disease patients. This finding suggests these specific choroidal filling defects are not pathological in sickle cell retinopathy.

Background:

  • Two recognized choroidal occlusion syndromes exist: triangular syndrome and multifocal lesions.
  • Both syndromes have been previously documented in patients with sickle cell disease.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To investigate if early venous phase geographic filling defects of the choriocapillaris are more prevalent in patients with sickle cell disease (Hb SS or Hb SC).

Main Methods:

  • Comparison of early venous phase fluorescein angiograms.
  • Analysis included 51 patients with sickle cell disease and 15 age/race-matched controls.

Main Results:

  • No significant difference was observed in the occurrence of early venous phase choriocapillaris filling defects between sickle cell disease patients and controls.
  • The study found these specific filling defects were not more common in the rheologically impaired sickle cell patient group.

Conclusions:

  • Early venous phase choriocapillaris filling defects, in isolation, are not indicative of pathology in sickle cell disease patients.
  • These findings contribute to understanding the vascular manifestations of sickle cell disease in the choroid.
