Abstract:
The complex [Fe(L)Cl(3)], where L is bis(pyridylmethyl)amine, yields 89% of intradiol products and traces of extradiol products in DMF, but yields 84% of extradiol products in SDS micellar medium, illustrating the attainment of regioselective catechol cleavage.

In the first step, as depicted in Figure 1, the base deprotonates the β-hydroxy ketone at the hydroxyl group to form an alkoxide ion.

Selection Rules: Thermal Activation
Conjugated systems containing an even number of π-electron pairs undergo a conrotatory ring closure. For example, thermal electrocyclization of (2E,4E)-2,4-hexadiene, a conjugated diene containing two π-electron pairs, gives trans-3,4-dimethylcyclobutene.
