Psychosurgery01:30

Psychosurgery

Psychosurgery, the surgical alteration or permanent removal of brain tissue to alleviate severe psychological conditions, stands as one of the most radical and controversial treatments in the history of mental health care. Its development and application have evolved significantly, marked by dramatic shifts in scientific understanding and ethical perspectives.

Introspection01:29

Introspection

Introspection, long upheld as a reliable route to self-knowledge, involves examining one's thoughts, emotions, and mental processes. It underpins many psychological practices, from mindfulness meditation to psychotherapy and self-help strategies. However, empirical evidence challenges the accuracy of introspection as a means of understanding oneself.Limitations of Introspective InsightSeminal work by Nisbett and Wilson demonstrated that individuals are frequently unaware of the true causes...

Depression: Overview

Depression is a prevalent mental illness marked by persistent sadness and lack of interest in previously enjoyable activities. It can take several forms, including major depression, persistent depressive disorder, and bipolar I and II disorders. Symptoms range from emotional changes like chronic worry to physical changes like sleep disturbances and suicidal thoughts. From a neurobiological perspective, depression is believed to be triggered by abnormalities in the brain's prefrontal cortex,...
Kaplan-Meier Approach01:24

Kaplan-Meier Approach

The Kaplan-Meier estimator is a non-parametric method used to estimate the survival function from time-to-event data. In medical research, it is frequently employed to measure the proportion of patients surviving for a certain period after treatment. This estimator is fundamental in analyzing time-to-event data, making it indispensable in clinical trials, epidemiological studies, and reliability engineering. By estimating survival probabilities, researchers can evaluate treatment effectiveness,...
Long-term Depression01:03

Long-term Depression

Long-term depression, or LTD, is one of the ways by which synaptic plasticity—changes in the strength of chemical synapses—can occur in the brain. LTD is the process of synaptic weakening that occurs over time between pre and postsynaptic neuronal connections. The synaptic weakening of LTD works in opposition to synaptic strengthening by long-term potentiation (LTP) and together are the main mechanisms that underlie learning and memory.

Summary

Suicide remains a global health crisis, with Andhra Pradesh reporting high rates. This study analyzed 1007 suicide attempts, revealing hanging and insecticide poisoning as common methods, and projecting an epidemic without intervention.

Area of Science:

  • Public Health
  • Epidemiology
  • Emergency Medicine

Background:

  • Suicide is a significant global health issue, with India experiencing high and varied rates.
  • Andhra Pradesh contributes over 11% to India's suicide burden, yet data on attempted suicides is scarce.
  • Under-reporting of suicides and lack of comprehensive data on suicide attempts necessitate focused research.

Purpose of the Study:

  • To comprehensively analyze the characteristics of attempted suicides in Andhra Pradesh.
  • To utilize primary data to project future suicide attempt rates.
  • To inform public health policy and interventions for suicide prevention.

Main Methods:

  • Analysis of Patient Care Record (PCR) forms from the 108 emergency service in Andhra Pradesh (January-December 2007).
  • Inclusion of 1007 confirmed suicide cases identified through emergency records.
  • Follow-up assessment 48 hours post-emergency to confirm diagnosis and status.

Main Results:

  • Hanging and insecticide poisoning were the most common methods (72%) among suicide attempts.
  • Males predominantly used hanging and insecticide poisoning; females preferred self-immolation and hanging.
  • Self-immolation and insecticide poisoning exhibited the highest mortality rates (41.6%).
  • Projected mean attempted suicide rates for 2008: 3.2-3.8/1000 males, 3.3-3.7/1000 females, 6.4-7.6/1000 population (combined).

Conclusions:

  • A significant increase in suicide attempts is projected, indicating a potential epidemic if preventive measures are not implemented.
  • Policy changes, including restricting access to lethal substances and considering socio-economic factors, are crucial for reduction.
  • Tele-help services and brief hospital interventions are recommended supplementary strategies for suicide prevention.
