Photon-counting system for rapidly scanning low-level optical spectra

Abstract:

A signal-dependent method of photon counting is described that reduces the time required to scan lowlevel optical spectra but does not sacrifice either the SNR or the dynamic range achieved by conventional methods. This variable-measurement-time technique is particularly applicable to spectra having a wide dynamic range. Implementation of this new technique using slightly modified commercial apparatus is discussed.
