Coverage errors of two shade guides.

Summary

Dental shade guides limit tooth color accuracy. Using both Bioform and Vita Lumin guides together significantly reduces shade selection errors compared to using them individually, improving dental color matching.

Background:

Existing dental shade guides offer a limited color palette, leading to inaccuracies in matching natural human tooth colors.
Approximation to the nearest shade on a guide introduces inherent errors in dental shade selection for restorations.

Purpose of the Study:

To spectrophotometrically compare the color coverage accuracy of the Bioform and Vita Lumin dental shade guides.
To evaluate the combined accuracy of using both Bioform and Vita Lumin guides for dental shade selection.

Main Methods:

Spectrophotometric analysis of 335 human tooth colors.
Comparison of Bioform and Vita Lumin shade guides against human tooth colors using CIE L*a*b* color difference.
Calculation of average color difference (coverage error) for each shade guide and their combination.

Main Results:

No significant difference in coverage error was found between the Bioform and Vita Lumin shade guides alone.
A significantly lower coverage error was achieved when the Bioform and Vita Lumin shade guides were used in combination.
The combined use of both shade guides demonstrated superior accuracy in matching human tooth colors.

Conclusions:

Individual dental shade guides have limitations in accurately representing the full spectrum of human tooth colors.
Combining the Bioform and Vita Lumin shade guides is recommended to minimize shade selection errors.
Improved shade matching through combined guide use can enhance the aesthetic outcomes of dental restorations.
