Glyphosate herbicide can halt carbon dioxide (CO2) assimilation in barley plants without immediately impacting chlorophyll fluorescence. Gas-exchange measurements are more sensitive indicators of glyphosate toxicity than chlorophyll fluorescence.
Area of Science:
- Plant Physiology
- Biochemistry
- Agricultural Science
Background:
- Chlorophyll fluorescence is often used as a plant stress biomarker, assuming stress affects photosynthesis.
- Glyphosate inhibits photosynthetic electron transport indirectly by affecting sink processes.
- The study investigates the speed of glyphosate's impact on CO2 assimilation and chlorophyll fluorescence.
Purpose of the Study:
- To determine the sensitivity of chlorophyll fluorescence and gas-exchange parameters to glyphosate exposure.
- To assess the time course of glyphosate's effects on barley photosynthesis.
- To question the universal applicability of chlorophyll fluorescence as a plant stress indicator.
Main Methods:
- Experiments were conducted on barley (Hordeum vulgare L.).
- Measurements included CO2 assimilation, conductance, and chlorophyll fluorescence (using Kautsky curve parameters).
- Plants were exposed to increasing doses of glyphosate.
Main Results:
- Glyphosate caused a complete cessation of CO2 fixation and conductance.
- These effects were observed without significant changes in chlorophyll fluorescence.
- CO2 fixation and conductance decreased significantly within 1 day of glyphosate application, correlating with biomass reduction after 5-7 days.
Conclusions:
- Significant CO2 assimilation cessation can occur independently of chlorophyll fluorescence changes.
- The study questions the reliability of chlorophyll fluorescence as a universal indicator of photosynthetic stress.
- Gas-exchange parameters are more sensitive biomarkers for detecting glyphosate toxicity in plants.
